Congratulations on reaching 65! As you've likely noticed, you're receiving a flood of mail from insurance companies and agents eager to sell you their products. This can be an overwhelming period with a lot of information to process.

What should you do first?

I will provide you with clear and concise instructions on exactly what you need to do, for those who just want to get it done.

  • Three months before you reach 65, you should apply for Medicare Part A and Part B. It's advisable to begin sooner rather than later, as the Social Security Administration (which manages Medicare) is significantly understaffed.

    • To apply, you can choose one of the following methods:

      • Visit the Social Security website here. You will need to create an account with Social Security to apply for Medicare through this link. This option also allows you to claim social security benefits, though it's not mandatory to do so at the time of application.

      • Call the national number at 1-800-772-1213 to apply by phone.

      • The phone number for the Redding office is 1-866-964-1236 if you would like to schedule an appointment to do it in person.

  • After obtaining your Medicare card, or your award letter containing your

Medicare number and the effective dates for Part A and B, you should buy a prescription drug plan and a Medicare supplement plan. Depending on your location, a Medicare Advantage Plan might also be of interest to you.

    • Avoid enrolling in the first offer you receive in the mail. This is a common

mistake people make, as they often sign up without conducting research or simply choose what a friend has, leading to unnecessary expenses.

    • This is where I step in. I am here to assist you in discovering the most cost-effective plan that benefits your bottom line, not mine! My role is to guide you and offer the best possible information to help you make an informed choice. With more than 17 years of experience in the health insurance industry, I am confident in my ability to guide you in a way that leaves you feeling assured and well-informed.
